A born hunter, the Chartreux may have been primarily used to get rid of mice. It is agile and energetic, and has all the characteristics necessary in a good companion. It is a good-tempered, loyal, and above all, quiet cat. Owners rarely hear its voice. The Chartreux is a rare breed of domestic cat from France and is recognised by a number of registries around the world. The Chartreux is large and muscular (called cobby) with relatively short, fine-boned limbs, and very fast reflexes. Chartreux have rounded heads that taper near the mouth, giving them a smiling expression. Their medium-sized ears are set high. Their rounded eyes come in shades of gold and copper and may appear orange. The double coat features a water-repellant outer coat and a thick, soft undercoat. The breed became popular, but World War II intervened, decimating the country and the breed. After the war, the few remaining Chartreux were bred with blue British Shorthairs, Russian Blues, and Persians, to keep the bloodlines going. Today, du chat des Chartreux (The Chartreux Cat Club) works to preserve, promote, and protect the Chartreux. Browse Chartreux kittens for sale & cats for adoption.
